Best URL filter in Market
PA Advanced URL filtering is an essential module. I would say 'a must have' feature.
the idea is the same similar to any web filter but with more detailed categories and filters.
Ability to block URLs and applications with complete visibility and flexibility.
It is also user-friendly and easy to manage and doesn't require any special expertise to manage.
Since our users majority are Students, We use PA advanced URL filtering to protect our Internet traffic and Network from malicious attacks and bad content and also to force the Internet usage policy.

Broadcom Bluecoat SG. Bluecoat got sold several times between vendors and lost its credibility and reputation. Renewal prices were increased in an unreasonable way. support got worse. Broadcom basically lost interest in the products and made it worse after the migration. local sales reps were unsupportive.

Palo Alto's reputation is one of the factors, it is considered to be the top firewall appliance in the market.

Palo URL Filtering - A Must Have Product.
All internet traffic passes through our Palo Alto firewalls with Web Filtering enabled regardless of the point of origin within our network. We do both web filtering and SSL inspection. We create custom access permissions based on active directory group membership or IP address range. The Palo Alto Advanced URL filtering feature was a cost-efficient way to manage access to the internet and provide the necessary protection for our users.

- URL Specific filtering on YouTube.
- Easy overrides for SSL inspection.
- The UI is a bit confusing as to where you need to go to do things. It's made more so by the inclusion of Panorama, the centralized management tool, as some things have to be done in Panorama and others on the active node.
- Solid performance and throughput.
- Excellent support.
- Palo has been an excellent investment for us.
- Having robust URL filtering built into the same device as the firewall saves the cost of a separate appliance and improves performance.
Barracuda was a good product but couldn't keep up with our needs as we grew bigger. Forcepoint had the worst technical support I've ever seen. Palo outshines them all.

3. Automatic Prevention policy prevention.
4. Dashboards, Reports, Alerts availability.
5. API Operations
6. Integration with process related solutions such as Service Now.
However Palo Alto still needs to work out for more cross vendor collaboration to enable easy integrations, More robust API based operations, Pricing etc.

Palo Alto - Great Filtering Solution
We utilize Palo Alto Networks URL Filtering as our main filtering solution for the agency. We utilize it to block malicious sites, VPNs, and other categories. The filtering offers many various categories that cover all of our needs. It is updated regularly and it provides excellent reporting.
- Granular filtering with specific categories
- Constantly updated
- Alerts you when new categories are added
- Does require some filtering knowledge to understand the structure
- Have to use PUTTY to check the category a website is

Delivers granular control with ease!
We currently utilize Palo Alto Networks URL Filtering PAN-DB for controlling access for users and user groups in Active Directory. For example, we have groups setup in Active Directory to allow access to say Dropbox. This AD group is then tied into a URL Filtering rule in the security policy to allow whatever application access you configure. This serves us in a few ways.
- We do not have to create a Firewall change request to add a user to a URL application such as dropbox, rather just add the username into the AD group.
- Much easier to maintain access for control and Audit purposes when adding or removing a user's permissions.
- Integrates with active directory groups.
- Provides granular control of URL's and specific application levels.
- Allowed quick monitoring by categories.
- The top down URL filtering match can sometimes be tricky as the user may match something higher in the list and not receive all the permissions you intended.
- The reporting feature for specific URL's could be more easily configured.
- There is an additional cost for the URL filtering license.
- Ease of user access via active directory groups has been a big time saver and reduced management overhead of having a myriad of specific rules for one off user access requests.
- You can customize the user response pages, so for instance if a user gets a deny response page, we can provide them our direct contact info on how to request a change in the URL filtering policy thus reducing the need for help desk tickets that sit in a queue for any duration.
- The request a category change feature at Palo works well and always happens within 24 hours. Meaning if a new site is incorrectly categorized into something you are blocking via URL filtering, you can quickly request a re-categorization and be up and running without making any policy changes to your organization's firewall.
